TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Scientists in South Florida have developed creative new technology to help catch invasive Pisons in the Everglades.

South Florida’s Water Management District said it has collaborated with scientists at the University of Florida to develop the robotic bunny.

They are solar-driven and release the heat and aroma that induces Pison by mimicking real rabbits, a common food source for Pisons and other snakes. With cameras hidden inside, SFWMD can see when the robot bunny detects snake activity, allowing staff to locate and safely capture the snake.

“Invasive Pisons pose a major threat to wildlife such as birds, small mammals and reptiles,” the district said. “That’s why we continue to be creative and committed to protecting this sensitive ecosystem.”
