MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – An Oklahoma pediatrician accused of murdering his 4-year-old daughter was placed in jail early Thursday morning, prison records show.
Dr. Neha Gupta is charged with first-degree murder after investigators said they choked their daughter, 4-year-old Aria Talathi, and left it in the pool on June 27 while staying at a vacation rental home in El Portal, Florida.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by NBC affiliate WTVJ, Gupta had traveled from Oklahoma to Miami to stay at a rental home on Northwest 90 Street.
The man pretended to be a contractor to steal thousands of people from Hurricane Ian victims has been five years
The arrest warrant told police that Gupta told police that she and her daughter had fallen asleep in the bedroom of the rental house. At about 3:30pm, the mother said she saw her daughter wandering on the patio and in the water in the pool.
Gupta reportedly tried to save her daughter but couldn’t because she didn’t know how to swim.
The report said doctors found no water in the girl’s lungs or stomach, but cuts and bruises were found in her mouth. Doctors believe the 4-year-old died after suffocating and was later put in the pool.
Investigators believe Gupta staged the scene to show his daughter’s death as a random drowser
The detective obtained an arrest warrant and traveled to Oklahoma with the help of the former US S-Service to arrest Gupta.
Gupta was handed over to Miami-Dade County and booked at Turner Guilford Knight Correction Center early Thursday morning.
WTVJ reported that Gupta worked at OU Health and the University of Oklahoma. They told the news station that Gupta had been fired and that he had no longer seen patients as of May 30th.
