Can SpaceX expand Florida footprint?
Manatee County records show that the commercial spaceflight company has submitted spare documents to build a satellite communications facility in Myacca City. Founded by Elon Musk in 2002, SpaceX has become a leader in aerospace, known for its launch of rockets and partnership with NASA.
The proposal calls for a gravel compound fenced over a 0.73-acre area with 40 satellite antennas, according to building records. The property is located just south of Lake Manatee and west of Waterbury Road, 675 County Road.
According to Florida, the company has already expanded its operations in Florida, and plans to launch its first spacecraft from the Kennedy Space Center by the end of the year. SpaceX’s Space Coast capital investment project will reach at least $1.8 billion by 2030, bringing an estimated 600 new full-time jobs,” the report said.
Things you need to know about planned SpaceX Florida facilities
SpaceX has an international subsidiary called Starlink. It uses satellites in orbit to provide internet access worldwide, including remote locations without communication infrastructure.
“Starlink, coupled with deep experience in both spacecraft and orbital operations, leverages advanced satellites and user hardware to provide high-speed, low-latency internet for users around the world,” the company’s website states.
County building records show that Myakka city’s satellite compounds support high-bandwidth low-decrease data communications.
“The antennas and associated infrastructure will promote both uplink and downlink communication services,” the proposal states.
In addition to SpaceX, Musk is the CEO of Tesla and Social Media Company X (formerly Twitter).
