SANFORD, Fla. (WFLA) – The storm crashed Sanford’s July 4th celebration on Friday, but it’s not just because of the rain.

City officials said the lightning strike was unexpectedly launched before scheduled.

One lightning bolt was hospitalized after attacking

“We are relieved to report that no injuries have occurred as a result of this incident,” the official wrote in a news release Friday.

The fireworks display was then cancelled, but the rest of the activities on July 4th were scheduled to continue at 9pm as originally planned.

Participants were asked not to bring personal fireworks to the event as they could pose a safety hazard.

“The safety of our residents and visitors remains our number one priority,” city officials said. “Unauthorized fireworks pose serious safety risks to both public and paramedics.”

No further details were available immediately.
