According to an arrest report obtained by NBC 6 South Florida, the suspect, 21-year-old Ishaan Sharma, was back in his seat when he suddenly came behind another passenger and grabbed the man by his neck. The lawmaker said this appears to be happening without provocation.
The two then began a fight, filmed by two Instagram users, showing passengers repeatedly punching Sharma. The flight attendants tried to disband the fight, but the other passengers cried out, “Stop it!” And then “Let him go!”
The brawl left Sharma shaking at her left eyebrow. The victim also maintained minor cuts but refused treatment.
Deputies boarded and took Sharma into custody. The video showed him being led by a plane and handcuffed through the airport. Officials said Sharma was treated at Jackson West Hospital and was later taken into custody. He is facing one battery.
According to a report by NBC affiliate WPLG, Sharma appeared in court on Tuesday, claiming that his lawyers were meditating when he faced other passengers.
“My client is from the religion he meditates,” defense attorney Lenny Gordon told the court. “Unfortunately, the passenger behind him didn’t like it.”
The judge ultimately decided to issue Sharma a $500 bond, banning him from contacting the victim in person or on social media.
