Officers help to have babies on the Florida turnpike

MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – Two officers were in the right place at the right time when their young mother fell into labor on the Florida turnpike Tuesday morning.

NBC affiliate WTVJ reported that 21-year-old Lorena Acosta was in a car driving from Homestead when the water broke. Her stepfather quickly flagged a Miami-Dade school police officer and asked her first responder for help.

However, the first responder did not do it in time for traffic and the baby was on the way.

The officers descended onto the ground near the passenger door and helped give birth to Acosta’s baby.

“I wore gloves and led her to deliver, I told her, ‘Look, your body will tell you what to do,'” Officer Sofia Blancas told the news station.

Officer Melissa Fernandez quickly arrived at the scene.

“When I got there, I put on my gloves and said, ‘What do I need, what do I need?’ She said, ‘I need a blanket’ so I drove into the car and had an emergency blanket,’ Fernandez said.

Acosta told the news station that he was grateful that the officer was there.

“It was my first baby and she told me the whole time, so I was nervous, “It’s all fine. Don’t worry, we’re here to help you,” she said.
