LOXA Hatchee, Fla. (WFLA) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is holding a press conference at the South Florida dog rescue.

The bill, called Trooper Law and Dexter Law, is named after two puppies who faced abuse at the hands of their owners.

Just before Hurricane Milton hit Florida, a dog was found tied to a fence along the interstate. He was named Trooper as a nod to the Florida Highway Patrol trooper who rescued him.

Trooper law would make a three-fold felony abandoning a pet prior to a natural disaster. Violators face up to five years in prison and face a $10,000 fine.

The trooper has since been hired and lives his best life on all accounts. But Dexter wasn’t that lucky.

Dexter’s law was named after a newly adopted puppy who was found to be beheaded and wrapped in a plastic bag at Fort DeSoto Park in Pinellas County. It will enact stiffer penalties for violent animal cruelty cases and create a database of known animal cruelty members within the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
