Watch: Florida Sheriff confused the man who threatened to kill him

Volsia County, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida sheriffs are not kind to be threatened, even from thousands of miles away.

Matthew Moulton, 45, of Washington, learned the lesson last week when Volsia Sheriff Mike Chitwood met him at the airport and gave him a private ride to the county jail.

In March, detectives from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office discovered a rambling email sent from Moulton to Sheriff Chitwood.

According to the affidavit, he appears to be having trouble with the Chitwood campaign released last year, where he posted a mug shot of a student who had made a false school shooting threat and a “Perfes Walk.”

Moulton accused Chitwood of targeting people’s freedom of speech and deliberately “treating satire in the same way as integrity.”

Moulton threatens the sheriff’s life, as he appears unable to find other reliance due to his concerns.

“I’m going to have to threaten you to death,” Moulton wrote in an email. “It’s coming. There’s nothing we can do to stop it.”

In Florida, written threats of causing physical harm to someone are felony. So the detective contacted the local police station in Moulton and asked the officers to ask him some questions.

According to the affidavit, Moulton admitted to writing an email to a Washington officer, but claimed it was within his initial right to amend.

The judge signed a warrant for his arrest, and Chitwood was there to grant honors when Moulton landed.

Moulton was charged with written or electronic threats to the second-degree felony, murder. His bond was set at $100,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 19th.
