Louisiana lawmakers are facing criminal charges after hitting specific barriers allegedly driving with three children in the vehicle and disabled, state police said Wednesday.
Rep. Kyle M. Green Jr., a Democrat who represents parts of the Parish of Jefferson in South Louisiana, has been charged with misdemeanors punished by first assault on driving while drunk, fines, prison time or license suspension.
He was also charged with three counts of child extinction and traffic violations.
Louisiana State Police said officers responded to the crash around 2:30am Wednesday, when Greene allegedly “driving off the road” and allegedly struck a concrete barrier in a vast suburban parish outside New Orleans. Greene and his children were not injured, a police statement said.
The officer said he noticed signs of disability while interacting with lawmakers. Green was arrested after an outdoor drinking test. Green refused to submit to the Breathalyzer test.
Lawmakers did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comments from the Associated Press.
The second term lawmaker was first elected in 2019 and is currently in the middle of Louisiana’s 2025 legislative meeting.
Under Louisiana law, lawmakers are “privileged” from arrest under certain circumstances, including whether to go to committee meetings, under certain circumstances during sessions.
