TAMPA, Fla. (Nexter) – Stephen Leatherman, a coastal scientist and professor known as “Dr. Beach,” has revealed his 2025 Top Beach pick.
This year, a beach on Long Island in New York tops its annual list. This has often been dominated by Sandy Spots in Hawaii or Florida over the past few years.

“Coopers Beach is located on the South Shore in Long Island, New York, and is protected from the cold Labrador flows of the beautiful village of Southampton,” reads the description shared on Dr. Beach’s official website. “As the country’s first ‘Gold Coast’, Coopers Beach is made of grainy white quartz sand, hundreds of yards wide. The beach is supported by large sand dunes covered in American beach grass, studded with luxurious mansions. โ
Coopers Beach took a steady trajectory towards first place, taking third place on Dr. Beach’s list in 2023 and second in the 2024 edition.

For the remaining listings for 2025, two beaches in Hawaii (Wailea Beach in Maui and Poipu Beach in Kauai) ranked second and third. Additional beaches in New York and Hawaii, as well as beaches in Florida, South Carolina and Massachusetts, concluded their top ten.

Leatherman, professor and director of the Institute of Coastal Research at Florida International University, has published his annual list since 1991. He is responsible for annual rankings for ratings of 50 different criteria, including water temperature, sand softness, crime levels, and availability of beach amenities. According to his past news releases, Leatherman is also awarding “bonus points” to beaches that ban such activities as being a non-smoking beach advocate.
