Republicans overtake Democrats on Miami-Dade County voter registration shift

MIAMI, Fla. — Miami-Dade County, considered a Florida Democratic home, shows the latest voter registration data showing Republicans outperform Democrats. This change is a milestone for the county’s Florida GOP, which once served as a cornerstone of democratic electoral power.

According to the latest voter registrations, there are currently 464,370 registered Republicans (34%) compared to 440,790 Democrats (32.27%) and 429,099 independents and third-party voters (31.41%). The GOP now leads the county with total registered voters, showing a reversal of trends over decades.

Miami-Dade has seen a surge in Republicans in recent years when the trustworthy Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton scores 30 points county in 2016. Republican leaders believe they are opposed to a shift towards targeted outreach that highlights issues such as public safety, education and economic opportunities, as well as progressive policies. Republicans are seeing increased support from Hispanic voters, particularly among the Cuban and Venezuelan communities.

In recent elections, Republican candidates achieved drastic victory with major local races. In 2022, Gov. Ron DeSantis won the county as part of a broader statewide reelection victory, and former President Donald Trump carried the county in 2024.

“This is a complete denial of the Democrats’ failed agenda. Miami-Dade is no longer their safe haven. It is the heart of the heartbeat of the Republican revolution.”

Power praised various party leaders for their role in change, including Miami-Dade GOP Chairman Kevin Cooper, State Commission Juan Polas, State Commission Liliana Ross, former chairman Alex Lizo, Rene Garcia and former state commission Kevin Cabrera. Senator Marco Rubio, a longtime figure in Florida Republican politics, was also highlighted in his early foundations in the region.

Florida Republicans noted that statewide voter registration has changed dramatically over the past few years. In 2018, the Democrats received a 300,000 registered lead. As of 2024, Republicans currently have a 1.29 million voter advantage statewide.

“This is a victory for all Republicans who refused to keep Miami-Dade blue,” Power said. “The county is currently a Republican base and is building on this momentum to shape the future of Florida.”
