Floridians must check their driver’s license before flying

This week, Florida travelers will need to comply with their actual IDs to access certain federal facilities on domestic flights.

The Substantial ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 committee’s recommendation that the federal government set standards for issuing identification documents, such as driver’s licenses and identification cards. This law and regulations establish minimum security standards for license issuance and production, and prohibit federal agencies from accepting non-integrated driver’s licenses or identification cards for certain official purposes.

Key Points:

The official objectives covered by law and regulations are as follows: Access to certain federal facilities. Boarding a federally regulated commercial aircraft. Enter the nuclear power plant.

The prohibition under this Act does not affect other use of a driver’s license or identification that is not related to official purposes, as defined by law.

Following the Actual Identity Act, if a customer provides the required ID document, it must be provided again only if the information changes (name, address, etc.). Transportation Security Administration (TSA) accepts only driver’s license and ID card with a star in the upper right corner as proof of identification at the airport. Currently, individuals and most federal facilities seeking access to military bases must present a real ID-compliant identification. You can also use your US passport in place of your actual ID compliant card for official identification.

<

Below is a list of what US citizens who do not comply with their actual ID can bring TSA officials and show when boarding an airline.

Valid and expired US passport. Original or certified copy of birth certificate. Note: Only birth certificates issued by the County Health Department or the CDC Vital Statistics Department are accepted. Hospital birth certificates are not considered certified documents and are not accepted.

Consular report on births overseas. A certificate of naturalization issued by DHS. Citizenship Certificate;

Many documents that require an actual ID are issued by state governments rather than federal agencies.
