Hillsboro Transport Tax Refund Checks are mailed and the leader is worried that he is mistaken for Junk Mail

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hillsboro County leaders want residents to keep an eye on their mailboxes for transportation tax refund checks.

Checks have started to be mailed from class action settlements.

Hillsboro County collected nearly $500 million in one-cent sales tax for the transport project, but the Supreme Court held in 2018 that the tax was illegal.

Millions of people are now returning to taxpayers.

Hillsboro County Commissioner Josh Wostal is worried that some people may accidentally throw money into the trash bin, thinking it’s a junk mail.

“We’ve received a lot of complaints about envelopes with actual refund checks that look like general spam emails,” said Commissioner Wostal.

According to the billing manager, 400,000 people have filed claims to receive a refund.

Those who lived or visited the county between January 2019 and March 2021 were eligible to apply for a refund.

Of the $569 million collected, some will be sent to those who apply for a refund, while others will spend $208 million on the Road Project.

“I am one of the first elected officials who are legally tasked with spending taxes, but that’s not a great feeling. The good news is that our path is desperately needed for repairs.

Checks began mailing in April. The standard refund amount is $100. Some recipients may also be based on how long you live in the county.

The payment processing company has sent a statement saying, “The first round was issued in April, with the rest being processed on a rolling basis.”
