PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WFLA) – History on Friday, the Catholic Church elected Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, whose brother is a Florida resident in Charlotte County.
In an interview with NBC affiliate WBBH, Louis Prevast described the appointment of the brother, formerly known as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevast, as “shocking”, “surprising” and “exciting.”
“I have very few words. I just care about my brother being elected Pope today,” Louis Prevast said.
He reminded him the moment he realized his brother had been chosen, “When Cardinal went outside and started reading his name, when he started reading Rob, he was going to say Roberto, and he was just surprised and said, ‘It’s Rob.” I got up, put on my clothes and just got hooked. ”
When asked if he saw this coming, Prevost replied, “We knew he was special, and we teased him about being Pope when he was six years old, and when he became cardinal, the rumors that he came to Rome were like “he has three chances to become Pope.” It’s incredibly amazing. ”
Prevost then addressed concerns surrounding his brother, the new Pope’s nationality. Hopefully it won’t happen, they just protect their nationality, nationalism and become the Catholic Church. ”
