Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (WFLA) – The owner of a malnourished animal who loves to care for a sick horse and licks mucus has been arrested for felony animal cruelty, the arrest affidavit said.
On March 1, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office received complaints from the care and control of Palm Beach County animals, including sickness in the home and “defeated” horses. A vet visited the house on February 23rd for a sick horse that had laying on the food stall and got up.

Veterinarians told deputies the horse was covered in feces and urine, and there were superficial scuffs on his head. The horse showed signs of dehydration, was hemodynamic and “somewhat shock.”
The doctor met with the animal owner, 74-year-old Pamela Beres, and recommended euthanasia as he began to believe that the horse’s labor, shallow breathing and the dilated abdomen would not achieve this all night.
“This horse is alive and I’ll live because I say it will,” cried Beress to the doctor.

The doctor said Deputy Bereth opened the horse’s eyes, licked it with his tongue, licked the mucus and spitted it out at the food stall.
When the aide arrived at the house on March 1, she saw four weakened horses with ribs, hip bones and spine protruding. A total of six horses and one ponies were found on the property.
The horse that doctors responded to in February died.
None of the horses had access to water and had minimal food. All animals, including pony, were underweight to varying degrees, “severely malnourished,” and some horses were on the brink of starvation.
Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control said it has seized the animals and received basic care for proper nutrition, dental work and deworming. It was also reported that parasites may have contributed to their reduction contributions.
Bereth was arrested Tuesday and charged with seven felony animal cruelty and seven confinement without food, water and exercise, the affidavit said.
