Woman attacked and killed by a crocodile on Lake Central Florida

WALES LACK – A crocodile attacked and killed a woman in Lake Central Florida Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The attack occurred near the mouth of Tiger Creek and at the mouth of Lake Kissimmee, south of Orlando, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee said in a news release.

Wildlife officials say the woman was canoeing when she met a crocodile and entered the water. The woman was later recovered from the water and declared dead.

Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Marine Corps units assisted in the search. Sheriff’s officials said the woman was with others at the time of the attack.

Investigators did not release details about the attack or crocodile. A contracted annoying crocodile trapper has been dispatched to the area.

Serious injuries caused by crocodiles are rare in Florida, officials said. The Wildlife Commission manages the statewide nuisance crocodile program to remove alligators that are believed to pose a threat to people, pets or property.
