The deadline is approaching to obtain the actual ID. This will be necessary for domestic travel starting this year.
Here’s what you need to know about it:
What is an actual ID?
According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Real ID is a national initiative to improve the integrity and security of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards.
Documents that meet the actual ID requirements are driver’s licenses or IDs issued by the states, including Florida.
How do I know if my license or ID is compliant?
The actual ID can be easily identified by the star in the circle in the top right corner of the card. If you have this icon on your driver’s license, it means that it meets the actual ID standard. If not, you should apply as soon as possible at the DMV office.
What is the deadline for getting the actual ID?
Starting May 7, 2025, US travelers will need to comply with actual ID regulations in order to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, travelers cannot board domestic flights without an actual ID card unless they have a US passport.
Regulations on domestic travellers follow measures passed in 2005 following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to increase national security. This was scheduled to come into effect on May 7, 2023, but the DHS decided to give the state more time to ensure people get new identifications. Florida began issuing actual IDs in 2010.
What happens if you arrive at the airport without an actual ID?
If you go to the airport from May 7th without an actual ID, passport or other acceptable ID, the Department of Homeland Security says, “we can expect to face delays, additional screenings, and the possibility that security checkpoints will not be allowed.”
The Transportation Administration says flyers that have no acceptable identification must undergo additional security procedures.
These ID requirements apply to anyone over the age of 18, including TSA Precheck people. According to the TSA, those who are unable to verify their identity or refuse to complete additional screenings will not be able to pass airport security.
What documents are needed to get your actual ID in Florida?
According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, you must bring one of the following documents to establish your identity, proof of your legal residence, and date of birth:
