At least nine people were killed and several others were injured after a car was rushed into the crowd during a street festival in Vancouver, local police said Sunday.

The driver was taken into custody.

The attack occurred at the intersection of Fraser Street and East 41st Street, where the Filipino community was holding a Lapu Lapu Day Block party on Saturday, Vancouver police said.

“We’ll provide more information as the investigation unfolds,” police added.

Videos shared on social media show bodies and debris on the ground along the long journey of the festival, with paramedics and police on the scene.

One witness told CTV News that he saw a black vehicle driving irregularly in the festival area just before the crowd was hit.

The Vancouver Sun reported thousands of people were in the area. Fraser Street was packed with food trucks and people during the attack.

“I couldn’t see the driver. All I heard was the engine revving,” Yoseb Vardeh, co-owner of the food truck Bao Buns, said in an interview with Postmedia.

“I’m out the food truck, looking down the road, and I have only a body everywhere,” Valde said, his voice broke. “He went through the entire block and went straight down the middle.”

In a social media post, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said he was shocked by the incident and was “deeply saddened.”

“We try to provide information as soon as possible,” he said.

“Our idea lies in all the people affected and the Filipino community in Vancouver during this incredibly difficult time.”

BC Premier David Ebby said he was shocked and heartbroken by the attack.

“We are in touch with the city of Vancouver and provide the support we need,” Eby says. “My idea is with the victims and their loved ones.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated” to hear about the “terrifying events” at the festival.

“I express deep sadness to the loved ones of those killed and wounded, to the Canadian community in the Philippines, and to everyone in Vancouver. We are all mourning with you.”

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are grateful for the prompt action of our first responders.”

Conservative leader Pierre Polyeble also said he was shocked by the news.

“My thoughts are about the Filipino community and all the victims who were targeted by this pointless attack,” he said.

“Thank you to the first responders on-site while we wait for more.”

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said the incident was “terrifying.”

“While we wait to learn more, our thoughts are the victims and their families, and the Filipino community in Vancouver.
