DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) — A child was killed after a family dog ​​chased oncoming traffic Wednesday night, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.

The child reportedly left the house following the family dog ​​who escaped and ran into approaching traffic. He was then hit by two vehicles.

The child was identified as one year old, according to NBC affiliate WESH.

Officers responded to the 2900 block of North Halifax Avenue around 8:21pm in the crash and found a seriously injured child.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with a life-threatening injury, but was later declared dead.

Daytona Beach Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
