California plans to sues the federal government for “destroying Americaorps”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on April 17 that the state plans to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration to “demolate the Americans.”

According to the Services Committee of America, a non-profit organization that supports and provides America’s volunteer programs, approximately 85% of America’s federal staff are placed on paid administrative leave, with all Americanorps NCCC members being sent home.
Americaorps NCCC is a full-time volunteer housing services program for around 2,200 people to age 26, according to the program.

The Epoch Times reached out to Americaorps for comment.

The Trump administration says it is working to reassess funds and identify federal areas to reduce spending.

On February 11, President Donald Trump signed an order directing agency directors to outline measures “eliminate waste, bloating and isolating” and “submit plans to reduce the size of the federal workforce through improved efficiency and attrition.”

According to the organization, Congress provided more than $1.3 billion in funding for fiscal year 2025. California is the top recipient of Americaorps fundraising, receiving $132.8 million last year.

In his announcement, Newsom vowed to take legal action against the federal government, which allegedly shut down volunteer agencies.

“We went from the New Deal, the new frontier, the great society to the federal government that gives middle fingers to volunteers serving fellow Americans,” Newsmom said in a statement. “We sue to stop this.”

The governor said the state will increase recruitment for its California Services Corps, the largest service unit in the country.

Participants in the Americancorps California program can receive a living scholarship while they make money for universities and trade schools and work to support community projects and natural disasters.

According to the Newsom’s Office, in the 2023-2024 year of service in California, Americorps members provided about 4.4 million hours of work, mentored or mentored nearly 74,000 students, raised 17,000 foster parents with education and employment, and planted 40,000 trees.

Members also supported 26,000 households affected by the Los Angeles wildfires in January, packing 21,000 food boxes.

The American Service Commission has urged the federal government to continue its Americanorps program.

“We are grateful to the US Senators and the bipartisan champions of the House. “We encourage continued funding and operational continuity to avoid catastrophic impacts on individual Americanorps members, volunteers, and the states and communities they serve.”
