The US-born American citizen was in custody at the request of immigration authorities on Thursday, but showed his US birth certificate to court and county judges found no reason why he was considered an “illegal alien” who entered Florida illegally.
Juan Carlos Gomez Lopez, 20, was arrested Thursday evening by the Florida Highway Patrol and charged under state immigration laws that have been temporarily blocked since the beginning of this month. Details of Gomez Lopez’s arrest and detention were first reported by the Florida Phoenix News website.
Leon County Judge Lashaun Liggans said at the hearing that “this is actually a real document,” after inspecting her birth certificate, but she had no jurisdiction to not find a possible cause of the claim.
