No year marks from Florida council members

The term “aremark” refers to federal spending on specific projects in a particular Congressional district, often referred to as “pet projects.”

For example, local council members may insert funds into local universities or insert money into new parks into spending bills. For many years, conservative groups have argued that ears lead to wasted and corrupt spending.

The hearmarks ban was introduced for 11 years from 2011 to 2021.

Government Citizens of Waste (CAGW) said that during that time it saved taxpayers an estimated $141 billion in just 11 years.

Doing maths, savings from that 10-year ban is over $1 billion in DEI reductions. Over a year, it has funded more than $100 billion from the Department of Education. Over three years of USAID spending ($43 billion). There have been billions of savings, but Cagw says Congress has found a way to avoid the ban.

Will this stop under a GOP controlled parliament? “I don’t know,” said David Williams of the Taxpayer Protection Union. “They are campaigns that support the ban, but when it comes to spending, their language doesn’t match what they do,” Williams said.

In 2022, the parties voted to regain the year mark, resulting in increased spending. The year mark cost $18.9 billion in 2022, the most since 2009.

Last year, a political article entitled “Florida Republicans opposed the Harmarks and took the money anyway” showed millions of articles that Florida GOP Congress members voted to take back to their districts.

According to the article, Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donald signed a pledge in 2021 with a promise not to seek a significant purpose. However, in 2024, Rep. Donald demanded more than $185 million, bringing it to about $18 million against the goal of a “community-funded project.”

Another Florida Republican Rep. Greg Stube, supported the ban in 2021, but in 2024 he regained nearly $10 million in his district.

“We don’t intend to allow the district to miss out on federal funding opportunities for financially responsible projects like the Democrats’ sailors who have passed away.

The conservative group supported reinstatement of the Yamark ban, saying that Elon Musk and the Doge Committee will help in the government’s efforts to reduce waste.

The year marks are in vain and despite Republican leaders saying they are financially responsible parties, there is no indication that current GOP leadership will do anything to eliminate the year mark.
