Walton County, Fla. (WMBB) — The Walton County Sheriff’s Office announced the death of Deputy William May, who was involved in a shooting in the head of a moss tribe on Wednesday afternoon.

Deputy May was not expected to work, but he applied to work for an overtime shift. He had answered a call at General Doll on Lancelot Road, north of Highway 90.

Sheriff Mike Atkinson said the aide had a brief 10-15-second argument with the suspect. He says the suspect walked behind him and left the store. The suspect then drew a gun and fired it multiple times in May. Deputy May pulls his gun and is able to return the fire. The suspect died at the scene.

Deputy May was able to seek assistance. Walton County Fire Rescue, and EMT, responded to the scene and transported it to North Okaloosa Medical Center over May. Atkinson says the surgeon and doctor worked four hours in May, but could succumb to the wounds shot by the gun.

Atkinson confirmed that May was wearing a ballistic vest that would stop several rounds. However, the sheriff says one round went under the vest. This was a shot that was allegedly killed in May.

Sheriff Atkinson says he will work to provide support to Deputy May family during this difficult time.
