(WJW) – More than 200,000 pounds of liquid egg products have been recalled nationwide, as the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSI) may contain cleaning fluids with chemicals commonly used for bleaching.
The recall comes from Cargill Kitchen Solutions, based in Lake Odessa, Michigan, and applies to four products sold under the labels or logos of “Egg Beater” and “Bob Evans”: FSI said the products were shipped to distributor locations in Ohio and Texas and for foodservice use in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois and Iowa.

According to FSIS, liquid egg products sold in 32 oz cartons may contain a washing solution containing sodium hypochlorite. The National Library of Medicine states that sodium hypochlorite is a chlorine compound commonly used as a “disinfectant or bleach” and is “commonly known as a bleach” when dissolved in water.
“This issue was discovered when FSI received hints on potential contamination of these products. After investigating and conducting a thorough evaluation of the contents of the cleaning solution, FSIS scientists concluded that the use of this product should not cause adverse health effects.
Class III recalls are the lowest risk classification of FSIS, defined as “marginal risk.”
No side effects have been reported and no adverse health effects are expected, FSI said. However, the FSI advised that anyone concerned about the related illness should contact their health care provider.
