JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) – Two sailors are dead after a boat capsized on the St. John’s River, and two are still missing.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said that while eight people were on the boat on Friday night, the 18-foot boat landed near Goat Island for unknown reasons.

According to Jacksonville of the US Coast Guard, they received reports of four people on the boat and perhaps four people below. No one reportedly wore a life jacket.

Four people on the boat were alive that night, but one was found dead.

On Sunday evening, authorities confirmed they had discovered another boat had died. The crew was still actively looking for the two remaining sailors.

JSO’s marine and diving units continue to search the river using sonar technology, while the air units patrol from above. The crew works alongside Florida fish and wildlife, USCG and local law enforcement agencies.

“We have been working 24 hours a day starting Friday night to bring resolutions,” the sheriff’s office wrote to the post office.

The crew searched for air and water covering more than 270 square miles for about 17 hours, according to the Coast Guard. They announced on Saturday that the search would be suspended.

“We spread our deepest sympathy to the families and loved ones of missing people,” said Burton Nanny, Jacksonville Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator for the Coast Guard Sector. “Suspending a search effort is a very difficult and heartbreaking decision that only takes place after a thorough and thorough search. We are truly grateful to our partner institutions for our merciless effort and unwavering support.”

The FWC is leading the investigation and will continue its search efforts along with JSO. Anyone with information about this incident will be asked to call 911.
