TOKYO — Japanese police said Friday that she arrested the suspect for fatal stab wounds by a YouTuber while she was live streaming on downtown Tokyo Street.
Tokyo Metropolitan Police said Tuesday that 42-year-old Kenji Takano was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was subsequently sent to the prosecutor, but has not yet been charged.
After the attacker repeatedly stabbed her with her upper body, the victim, Aeri Sato, was rushed to the 22-year-old hospital and was later declared to have died.
Witnesses and livestream viewers say they heard her scream for help, and the stream suddenly turned black.
The suspect told police that he got to know Sato through her live streaming, had seen her many times, and that they had been in economic disputes, including Asahi’s newspaper.
Broadcast NHK reported that Takano had lent Sato a large amount of money and that she had not repaid him despite the court orders she would do so.
Tarkano traveled from Oyama city, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Tokyo, and carried out the attack after Sato announced a live stream and tracked her location after watching footage, media reports cited police.
He told the police he wasn’t going to kill her.
Although violent crimes are still rare in Japan where gun control is very strict, in recent years there have been many well-known knife attacks and others using handmade guns in the wage and employment outlook.
