Ten people, including three brothers, have been found guilty of murder after a teenager was stabbed in a group attack in the park.
A total of 12 defendants faced the Queensland Supreme Court in Brisbane on Wednesday following the judge-only trial in November 2024.
Prosecutor Nathan Crane previously told Judge Lincoln Crowley that the 19-year-old boy died on September 13, 2020 near Zilmare Park in northern Brisbane.
Judge Crawley heard that the motives for the attack were retaliated as retaliation for John Walwal’s bashing at Ipswich Shopping Centre five days before Mekkonen was stabbed.
John Wal Wal is four brothers, defendants Crest, Gabréal, Johanna Wal Wal and Santo Wal.
Judge Crowley on Wednesday discovered 29-year-old Crest Wal Wal, Gablerial Wal Wal, 31-year-old, and Santo Wal, each murdered 36 people.
The three defendants were also found guilty of nine charges on 10 charges, causing illegal injuries to 10 victims, bats, knife, machete and assault, causing physical harm to 10 victims.
Majok Riel Majok, 23, Alex Edward Deng, 22, Chan Kuchmol Kon, 28, Joseph Lokolong, 28, Abraham Ajang Yaak, 30, Ben Abio, 23, Juma Makuol Deng Makuol, 28, committed murder.
“(Mekkonen) suffered a wound to the abdomen, cutting off the most important vein in the human body… Someone placed a bladed weapon on the most vulnerable part of the body and pushed it at 25 centimeters,” Crane said.
Crane said Mekong Nen was part of a group of people drinking alcohol and cards in the park when they formed “Cordons” around the deck where the accused sat.
“They arrived. They produced weapons. They quickly started using them,” he said.
Johanna Wal Wal was not guilty of 10 charges related to assault or injury on Wednesday, not murder.
25-year-old Malat Akoi Makuach was also found not guilty of murder and 10 other charges.
When Judge Crawley asked if he had anything to say before he was sentenced, he said “No.”
Judge Crawley said he intends to declare the defendant on March 31.
