Lee County, Fla. (WFLA) – A woman is being welcomed as a hero after saving an 11-year-old girl who slipped into a lake in South Fort Myers on Saturday.
According to NBC affiliate WBBH, just after 10am, Mia Garcia gathered shells with her sister at Lakes Park, slipped and fell into the water.
Sitting nearby, Bridget Addison heard Mia’s scream and immediately ran to the rescue, although she didn’t know how to swim herself.
“I saw her in the water when I looked over, so I just ran,” Addison said, giving the reporter details.
Mia’s grandmother, Dawn Lushert, told reporters that Mia, who has autism, knows how to swim, but she had trouble getting out because the area was slippery.
Addison manages to drag Mia to the embankment, and Mia’s grandmother thanked her for bringing her granddaughter back to safety.
“It shows a lot that there are good people out there and she’s one of them,” Lushert said.
