Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis instructed the flag to fly on today’s half staff on February 14th in memory of the victim at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School.

Seven years ago, on February 14, 2018, 17 people from the school died on “one of Florida’s darkest days,” DeSantis said.

The flag must fly with half staff on Friday, February 14th

“Students, teachers and faculty have shown great courage in the face of danger,” DeSantis said. “The sacrifices of these heroes and the brave actions of their first counterparts will never be forgotten.

“We will continue to convey our deep sympathy to our families, our loved ones and our Parkland community for their losses.”

Florida law passed to protect students

Since filming in Parkland, several laws have been passed in Florida to protect students and teachers and make schools safer.

Flag Etiquette: Raise the flag up and then lower it to half-staff

On the day the flag flies with half-staff, it must first be instantly raised to the top of the pole and then lowered to the half-staff position, according to the US flag code.

Before lowering the flag, raise it up again before lowering the day.

Which is correct: Half-mast or half-staff?

Both are correct. It depends on where the flag is flying.

At ships and naval stations, flags fly on semi-masts.

On the coast, the flags fly with semi-staff.

If you’re in Canada or the UK, according to FederalFlags.com, no matter where they are, the flags are flying on the half mast.
