BOKARATON, Fla. (WFLA) – A small jet approached moving to a busy road next to Boca Raton Airport on Wednesday, but it stopped short thanks to a special safety system.
A video released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) showed the Bombardier Challenger 300, a private plane that is the Bombardier Challenger 300 after overshooting the runway.
3 was seriously injured when the car flew off a wet highway at 100 mph, FHP says
The jet landed at the airport just after 5pm after a four-hour flight from Las Vegas. None of the four people on board were injured, officials said.
In the video, the airport’s designed material arrest system (EMAS) was deployed and the plane could be seen sliding down the runway before a cloud of debris flew into the air.
The jet stopped at the end of the runway. We were able to see some vehicles travelling down the road just off the strip. The photo showed the deep track left on the part of the runway that the plane came sliding to stop.
According to the FAA, the EMAS system is a lightweight, crushed material bed installed at the edge of the runway, slowing down aircraft overshooting, forwarding or running away from the runway.”
70 US airports are equipped with EMAS systems, including Chicago Executive Airport. The FAA said another plane stopped safely on Wednesday.
“These two systems did exactly what they were designed to do: they safely stop the aircraft when they’re off the runway,” said FAA administrator Brian Bedford. “This technology makes a huge difference in preventing serious accidents.”
