MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Two deputies have been praised for their heroic efforts after separating two injured residents from a completely submerged vehicle on a black night last week.

A body camera video released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office shows officers identified as deputies for Matt Fletchy and Juan Pepper Aureliana, running through water and thick leaves to help the trapped husband and wife escape.

An employee of Florida Circle K shot off duty officer 24 times, the sheriff says

Last Friday, around 8:30pm, the sheriff’s office said the couple was traveling on the Martin Highway when the couple was attacked by a car. The crashing force sent them off the road and onto a bank filled with deep water.

The car quickly sank into muddy water and the couple was locked inside. They called 911 but lost connection to the dispatch before fully explaining the location.

Lawmakers were sent to a general area of crash falls, but were unable to see the vehicles along the dark roads and instead relied on the sound of the victim’s car corners.

After finding a submerged car, deputies flew into the water and fought to clear out the escape route through thick trees and bushes. They were able to break into the car, drive the victim out of the almost underwater car and return it to dry land. The injured couple was then taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The sheriff’s office said it was still at work that it had found the vehicle that struck the victim and then fled the scene.

“Whether our incredible dispatchers and determined agents, this has become a clear case of our warriors working quickly and risking their lives to save others,” McSO wrote on Facebook.
