TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A Florida sailor went missing on July 28 after he left the ship, officials said.
The sailor was identified as Jose Antonio Olivera Lynch IV, a 19-year-old Air Boat Swain companion (launch/recovery device) airman. Rivera Lynch said she was originally from Middleburg, Florida, according to a USNI report.

Navy officials said both US and Australian border forces spent more than 45 hours searching for about 2,200 square miles in the Timor Sea, just north of the Australian continent. Searches were suspended on July 30th.

“Our deepest sympathy will go out to the family and friends of our sailor, Airman Rivera Lynch,” said Colonel Tim Waits, commander of USS George Washington. “We are deeply grateful for the support and coordination from all units that supported our search efforts, including partners from the Australian Defence Force and Border Forces.”
Officials said Rivera Lynch enlisted in June 2024 and began serving USS George Washington in January.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the family, friends and sailors of Airman Rivera Lynch during this incredibly difficult time,” he says, and the courage and dedication that all staff involved in this operation demonstrate the professionalism and commitment that defines our navy. ”
According to USNI, Rivera Lynch stayed in close contact with his family during his time at USS George Washington, with her father last speaking at about 10:40am on July 28th.
The report said Rivera Lynch’s father’s final conversation was positive.
“You became the first Rivera to go to a place you’ve never seen before. This is what I’m so proud of you. You’re my best,” Jose Rivera III told his son.
