DENVER (KDVR) – Two men, a 22-year-old from California and a 21-year-old from Florida, were killed in a plane crash near Erie Municipal Airport on Oct. 19, according to the Weld County Coroner’s Office.

The crash occurred east of the northern Colorado airport’s runway at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19.

The only victims of the crash were Niles Tilenius, 22, of San Mateo County, California, and William Johnston, 21, of Hillsborough County, Florida, according to a press release from the coroner’s office.

“We recognize this incident may have been difficult for many in our community to witness or hear about,” Erie Police said in an X post that day. “The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.”

The coroner’s office confirmed that the crash remains under investigation by federal agencies.
