Trump expects “good news” from Iran after his fifth round nuclear talk

Iranian officials described the latest consultation with the US as “slow and expert.”

President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he expects positive outcomes of nuclear talks with the US over the coming days following negotiations for the fifth round last week.

Trump said US negotiators have made “some real” and “serious progress” with Iranian representatives in talks to curb Iran’s nuclear program, but have not provided details.

“Let’s see what happens, but I think there’s good news on the Iranian front,” Trump told reporters before boarding the Air Force at New Jersey Airport. “We’ve spoken very good with Iran. And although I don’t know if I’ll tell you anything good or bad over the next two days, I feel that I might be saying something good to you.”

His remarks follow a meeting with US Special Envoy Steve Witkov, along with other US officials and Iranian representatives at the Oman Embassy in Rome on May 23. The US hopes Iran will lift and suck up US sanctions to curb its nuclear program.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busadi, who acted as a mediator in the negotiations, said that although the US and Iran have made some progress in the latest round of talks, they have yet to reach a decisive agreement.
“We hope to clarify the remaining issues in the coming days and move towards a common goal of reaching a sustainable and honorable agreement,” Al-Busaidi said on social media platform X.

Esmaeli Baghhai, a spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described his latest speech as “a gentle and expert,” saying Iran has once again reaffirmed its stance on specific issues.

Baghaei said that Al-Busaidi proposed a solution to resolve the obstacles that hinder the agreement between the two countries, but he did not provide details about the proposal.

“During this round, Iran’s fundamental status was once again clearly and transparently outlined,” he said. “Along with further deliberations in each capital, the Omani Foreign Minister has continued to work on the details of the proposed ideas and agreed to provide the parties with sophisticated concepts for further evaluation.”

Baghaei said details of the next round of talks will be decided later.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakich previously said that “there is absolutely no room for compromise” when it comes to the country’s uranium enrichment.

The 2015 Iranian nuclear deal, which Trump retracted in 2018, reduced Iran’s uranium enrichment to about 3.67% purity, sufficient to power nuclear reactors.

Since 2018, Iran has steadily increased its uranium enrichment. In February, the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency evaluated Iran as stockpiled around 605 pounds of 60% rich uranium. Iran needs to concentrate uranium to 90% to achieve weapons-grade skin sensation.
After taking office this year, Trump has imposed sweeping sanctions on Iran and restored “the greatest economic pressure” on the Iranian government to deny “Iran all paths to nuclear weapons.”
In an interview with NBC News on March 30, Trump warned of the possibility of military action if Iran refuses to end its suspected nuclear program.

“If they don’t make a deal, there’s going to be bombing,” he said. “But if they don’t make a deal, they could put secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago.”

Ryan Morgan contributed to this report.
