After weeks of White House hype and public unrest, President Donald Trump has announced a barrage of self-proclaimed “mutual” tariffs on friends and enemies.
The new tariffs that come on what Trump called “Liberation Day” are bids to boost US production and punish other countries for what he says is years of unfair trade practice. But the ratings of most economists have threatened the economy to plunge into a recession and fall into a decades-old alliance.
This is the latest:
Trump: “This is one of the most important days in American history.”
“It’s a declaration of our economic independence,” Trump said by announcing a barrage of self-explained “mutual” tariffs. “For years, hardworking American citizens were forced to sit on the sidelines as other countries became rich and powerful. But now it’s their turn to flourish.”
US financial markets are becoming volatile in anticipation of Trump’s tariff announcements. Trump claims the move will bolster the US economy despite many experts worrying that it could lead to higher prices for most American consumers.
