TALHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) – The 2026 midterm elections have been apart for over a year, but the showdown between the top Republicans in the state and county is beginning to focus.
In Florida, it is becoming a battle between Trump-backed candidates and DeSantis-backed candidates.

“Would this be a reporting card of who has political will? Who has political loyalty and who has the political support and popularity that he really talks about to Florida voters,” political analyst Tara News said.
The governor handmade cabinets full of loyalists. While he runs both Attorney General James Usmier and Chief Financial Officer Blaze Ingoglia in 2026, many wonder what he chose to take over the governor’s mansion.
DeSantis has already said that Donald won the green flag from President Trump earlier this year, but he will not support former House Speaker Paul Renner or Rep. Byron Donald.
Historically, DeSantis has shown that he is willing to go his own path, but the question is whether he is as convincing as Trump is among Florida Republicans.
Florida politics first reported new rumours that current House Speaker Daniel Perez would rekindle the DeSantis vs Trump showdown in 2026, with the president’s support.

The president was asked about the topic at a recent meeting with Perez in DC last week.
“We didn’t talk about it, but he did a great job. He’s really respected all over the country. He’s a leader,” Trump said.
“When President Trump warms up a candidate, gives him such a light in the media and gives him such a marketing appeal, you need to know that he is at least warming up that candidate over the other candidates,” Newsom said.
What’s more, 2026 is already predicted to be a competitive Republican primary, but Newsom says it could be a good for Democrats in Florida.
“I think Demoms will come from Byron Donald or Paul Renner, whether they step into the race, they’ll get to the back of David Jolly to oppose both types of messaging from the Republican Party,” Newsmom said.
