TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — We are quickly approaching the peak of hurricane season, with the National Hurricane Center saying that tropical depression is likely to form in the Atlantic next week.

Forecasters keep an eye on tropical waves coming from Africa’s west coast, slowly crossing the Atlantic. Since it was identified on Friday, the potential for development into the cyclone has been ticking.

WFLA Meteorologist Juliana Mejia

The NHC currently reports an 80% chance of development over the next 7 days. They said there is a high chance that they will develop tropical depression towards the end of next week.

For now, tropical waves are heading towards the Cabo Verde Islands off the coast of Africa, and are expected to bring heavy rain and gusts of wind. It travels around the west and northwest at approximately 15-20 mph.

The NHC is also monitoring low-pressure areas in the Central Atlantic, creating disrupted thunderstorms. Development is possible in the next few days, but the system is moving north from the US

Watch track the tropical Tuesday at 12:30pm (11:30pm ET) CT
