TAMPA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Fla. (WFLA) – Unusual winter weather across the South is causing flight delays and cancellations in Tampa.
In TPA, the amount of red on the board increases as the number of cancellations and delays increases.
“It feels like it’s been a day, it’s like it’s been three days, it feels like it’s only been one day,” Patricia Farmer said.
Patricia Farmer stayed at the airport all night and was awake for more than 24 hours.
Her plane was delayed and arrived at the airport at 11pm on a Tuesday night.
“I had reserved a car, but they close at 10 o’clock, so I can stay here until 7 a.m. and pick it up at that time and drive to Palmetto,” Farmer said.
The storm is spreading from Texas to Virginia, slowing down travelers.
“I was delayed several hours in Key West because of the fog, missed my connecting flight in Tampa, and now have to buy another one-way ticket to get from Tampa to Denver, which is frustrating.” Rachel Smith said.
“I was supposed to be in Tampa by at least 4pm, but my flight got canceled twice. Thankfully, I was able to rebook and ended up having an 8-hour layover in Denver. ” Farmer said. .
At TPA, nearly 40% of all flights were canceled or delayed on Monday and Tuesday.
As of Wednesday morning, TPA had 14 flights canceled and 37 delayed.
There were more than 4,000 delays across the country on Tuesday, including more than 1,000 at Atlanta Airport, the nation’s busiest airport, according to FlightAware.
The good news for travelers is that many airports, including those in Houston and Jacksonville, were closed but are expected to come back online Wednesday.
“We don’t know what’s going to happen when we get back, but we’re hoping it’ll go smoothly as the weather improves,” Farmer said.
