NEWS MARNA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – Three separate people were struck by lightning on Friday while spending time outdoors at News MARNA BEACH, city officials say.
One of the incidents happened at the beach around 12:30pm. Tammy Malphurs, director of Volusia County Beach Safety, told NBC affiliate Wesh that a man in his 20s stepped into the water when he was suddenly hit by Lightning.
Women pick up stunning shells on the beach and know that it is “the most deadly in the world.”
The first responders carried out CPR and other life-saving measures before taking the man to a local hospital. As of Friday afternoon, there was no further information about his condition.
Two more people were hit by lightning on Friday while playing golf at Venetian Bay Golf Course, according to the city of News Myrna Beach. Neither person required transport to the hospital.
The storm passed through the area mid-Friday, with the weather system bringing heavy showers to parts of the county, along with thunder and lightning.
Florida is known as the country’s “lightning capital,” and has reported more than 2,000 lightning injuries over the past 20 years, according to the CDC. However, the chances of being hit remain incredibly low. Authorities say there is less than one in a million people who will be hit.
