(Nexstar) – As for the safety of you and your family, there’s nothing that will help you feel more at ease knowing that where you live is considered a “safe neighbour.” But what exactly makes up a “safe neighbour”?
A new study from SmartAsset examined 360 different suburbs in the United States, examining various data that consider the average person living in an unsafe area, including violent crime rates, property crime rates, and excessive drinking.
The top of the list was Lehigh, Utah, with a population of just over 81,000 and just south of Salt Lake City. Lehigh is the only suburb in the entire study where there was less than 10% of adults who drank too much. They were also ranked relatively low for per capita violent and property crimes.
Ranked just below Lehigh were three suburbs located in Bethesda, Maryland, Great Falls, Virginia, and Rockville, Maryland.

In particular, Great Falls ranks very low in terms of crime compared to other parts of the country and has relatively little traffic.
The top five safest suburbs in Florida were Key Biscayne, Kissimmee, Coral Gables, Homestead and Winter Garden.

As for the other end of the spectrum, several suburbs have landed at the bottom of the rankings for a variety of reasons.
The last place in the ranking was Lumberton, North Carolina, where traffic deaths per 100,000 people were so high that it was 41.4 (highest on the list), down due to the second-highest violent crime per person.
Second to second are Plymouth, Massachusetts. Massachusetts had more than twice the amount of violent crime per person in Lumberton, North Carolina, despite its extremely low traffic.
According to SmartAsset, the strange suburb ranked near the bottom is Scottsburg, Indiana, with no reported single violent crime. Nevertheless, Scottsburg has completed the third highest traffic death toll in the country. This is the main reason why suburbs without violent crime have fallen to the bottom.
