The political difference is that it destroys marriage, research shows

What once was a small disagreement at the dinner table is now leading a couple called to stop it. In an age of political polarization in America, strong opposition political views have caused fractures that could lead to lasting damage.

A study by Wakefield’s study found that 11% of Americans ended their romantic relationships due to political inconsistencies. This trend is more pronounced among younger people, with 22% of millennials reporting such breakups.

The gap between Republicans and Democrats is growing, but politics is driving wedges between couples. Many couples call it quits because of political differences with their spouses.

Mixed political marriages.

The political situation remains divisive, but many Americans are not afraid to cross the aisle when choosing a partner. Researchers have found that “mixed” political marriages are relatively common.

Political scientists assessed the voter registration record of over 18 million voters to determine the percentage of mixed political marriages. It can be seen that 30% of married couples belong to a different political party than their partner.

Political differences and divorce

Partisanship does not prevent couples from getting married, but it may contribute to divorce. A Wakefield research study found that 29% of Americans view the political situation as a source of tension between partners. Over 20% of respondents also knew of couples who suffered marriages and relationships after the 2016 election.

Can you divorce about political differences?

“In some states, you can,” says Kim Nutter, a family law prosecutor who is a partner at Brinkley Morgan Law Firm in Boca Raton.

Nutter says he dealt with the couple about the political impact on divorce and breakup.

Whether you’re red or blue, there’s no denying that political differences can be a difficult obstacle to overcome in marriage. Wakefield’s research study shows that it is becoming increasingly difficult for couples to overcome conflicting perspectives in modern political situations.

Nutter’s advice for couples facing this problem. “How to address these political inconsistencies before they escalate to divorce and approach the issue when divorce is inevitable.”
