The free digital collection offers titles in multiple genres and over 20 languages.
Californians now have access to over 300,000 e-books and audiobooks via a new virtual bookshelves released by the California State Library on March 26th.
“With just a few clicks, Californians can grab what they’re looking for on their California bookshelves,” state librarian Greg Lucas said in a statement. “Believe me, we tried to make something for all our readers.”
In addition to e-books and audiobooks, the platform offers over 70,000 unique titles. Over 3,500 of these are available instantly without latency or queue retention.
Previously, users had to log in through the participating library to access the state’s ebook collection. With the new system, access is open statewide and is more convenient.
“While you’re at home, in your coffee shop or traveling, you’ll always be able to enjoy the convenience of this new virtual library bookshelves,” Lucas said. “Did I say it’s free?”
The platform is a collaboration between California State Library and the Palace Project, and has developed an app that provides seamless access to digital content from both state and local libraries.
Users logging into the Palace app through their local libraries will also have access to the full e-book and audiobook catalogues of the local library, in addition to their state collections.
