The new Orlando Science Center exhibition discovers daily mathematics

Do people want to design skateboards, pound drums, pretend to be weather, and effectively explore Mars? Or do you want to study geometric properties, fractions, statistics, variables, and algebra?

The newly installed “second extreme” exhibition at the Orlando Science Center employs these first activities and cleverly spotlights mathematical properties.

“We’re excited to be able to help you get started,” said Jeff Stanford, vice president of marketing at Science Center.

“It shows the hidden mathematics in everything,” said Zachary Maehot, a science program specialist.

The first stop seen in “2therctreme” is a snowboarding experience called border crosses, where visitors stand on the pivot board and use angles and torque to fly around on-screen obstacles in the race.

“It’s active, colorful and practical,” Stanford said. “There are opportunities for parents and children to do things together, for children, teens and adults themselves.”

In the center of the exhibition space is Style Revolution. This is a 360-degree photo shoot with 20 cameras that mix geometry with the atmosphere of the Red-Carpet Award show.

“It’s very gorgeous and has a Grammy feel, but it’s easy to access,” Mailhot said. The completed round picture will be sent to participants by email.

Amateur meteorologists can interpret weather data and record weather warning videos backed by green screens.

Among other exhibits are kiosks entering computer security, building competitive bikes as a way to learn about the pitch and frequency of music and mixing, distance, time and speed, and competitive bikes.

The 40 “2therctreme” exhibition was created by an evergreen exhibit.

“It was on the Tour for almost 10 years and now it’s been renovated,” Stanford said. “They took some exhibits that are really working well for them, and then they added some new experiences.

The exhibits included with regular Orlando Science Centre admissions will remain until January 5th. For more information, please visit osc.org.
