MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – A man accused of shooting two Israeli tourists in Miami Beach assumes that the Palestinian is currently being charged with hate crimes.

Mordechai Brafman, 27, lives in prison for hate crime-related charges related to the February 15 incident, according to a report by NBC affiliate WTVJ.

Police said Brahman shot a car carrying father and sons, Yaron and Ali Rabbi, who were visiting South Florida from Israel. Ali Rabbi was shot in the shoulder and his father’s forearm was grazed by a bullet.

After the shooting that police said they had not provoked, Brahman said, “While he was driving the truck, he saw two Palestinians and voluntarily stated that he had shot and killed both,” police said. According to the report.

Brahman’s lawyer Dustin Tishler told WTVJ that his father and son were reaching out for weapons, and that Brahman simply defended himself. The doctor declared Brahman incompetent, but a second opinion is required before the judge gets heavy.

Tishler denied that the shooting was motivated by hatred. Brahman pleaded not guilty to the charges and remained in jail on Tuesday.
