Another day. Another announcement regarding the store closure.

JCPenney announced Thursday it would close eight locations this year, adding it to its list of over 200 closures.

Earlier this week, Joann Fabrics and Crafts said it would close 500 of its 800 stores, including over 30 in Florida.

This is what we know.

The location of the Florida JCPenney was not one of the latest store closure lists.

A JCPenney spokesperson told USA Today that eight stores will close by mid-2025. The closure this year will be in stores in these cities.

San Bruno, California, Colorado Pocatello, Idahotopeka, Kansa San Napolis, Maryland, Nowinton, New Hamp Silly Cheville, North Carolina Charle Luston, West Virginia

Why does JCPenney close the store?

JCPenney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2020. At the time, the company said it would close more than 200 locations nationwide.

The chain was acquired in December 2020 by Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management Inc. In January 2025, JCPenney said it had partnered with Forever 21 to establish a new company called Catalyst Brands.

The merger also includes Brooks Brothers, Eepostall, Lucky Brand, Nautica and Eddie Bauer. Catalyst Brands is expected to open 1,800 store locations and employ 60,000 employees.

A JCPenney spokesperson said that although details about the recent closures have not been provided, individual store closures could occur due to “expiration of lease agreements, market changes, or other factors.” I’ve said that.

Florida didn’t spare due to the closure of Joan store

Florida was hit hard earlier this week when Joan Fabric and Craft announced it would close 500 of its 800 US stores.

36 Florida stores in 32 Florida cities will be closed.

When will sales begin with the closure of the Joan Store?

“If the claim is approved by the court, sales will begin on Saturday, February 15th,” Joanne spokesman Amanda Hayes told TCPALM.com.

Timelines may change and may shift from store to store, Hayes added.
