The family claims that his father refused medical care at Alligator Alcatraz

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Protesters gathered outside the US representative’s office on Friday to seek better treatment for Crocodile Alcatraz detainees. One family claims that their husband and father are denied medical care at the facility.

A group of civic activists said they were concerned that detainees are not receiving appropriate medical treatment. This happens when the facility is undergoing intense scrutiny over whether the detention center will be closed forever.

“He went to work and never came back,” said Johnny Hunt, co-founder of the Expanded Voice.

Tampa’s father and husband Joss Garvez was detained and taken to Crocodile Alcatraz, but claimed he was denied medical care at the facility during the Covid-19 outbreak.

“If the conditions are not humane, we are not going to tolerate it, and we are asking elected officials to do something about it,” Hunt said.

The group is now seeking support from Rep. Laurel Lee, who is co-sponsored by the new Alcatraz Act, which aims to ensure the assistance needed for states like Florida to detain and remove illegal immigrants.
At your side, 8 reached out to Lee’s office. “Lee promises to serve her members with diligence. When someone is detained, federal law requires our office to have a privacy release form from an individual before conducting an official investigation on August 24th. But as soon as it arrives from Mr. Galvez, we are ready to act promptly so that his concerns are addressed.”

As this story unfolds, Crocodile Alcatraz could be closed after an order to dismantle parts of the judge’s facility and detain additional immigrants.

White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt addressed these concerns this week and said the Trump administration will continue to be pulled back.

“We think it’s silly that activist judges inserted themselves into this immigrant’s attention facility, to the point where DHS now has to move these illegal immigrants to other detention facilities across the country,” Leavitt said.

Hunt says he hasn’t protested anyone to release Garves. They want him to be treated fairly.

“We’re here to say that this can be done in a humane way. In the American way, this is not a developing country where we are luring people out of the streets,” Hunt said.

When it comes to protesting against the crocodile Alcatraz, Gov. Ron DeSantis shared at a press conference this week that people are trying to “spin up.”

“I mean you literally go, like 10 people with signs and things. I would just find more things to do if it was me,” DeSantis said.

8 Your side reached the governor’s office and was introduced to an ICE official for a recent claim that Galves had been denied medical assistance. Ice has approved our request but has not received any additional information yet.
