Investigators said the day on the beach was horrifying for Florida tourists and advanced above their heads when the pickup turned over to her.
On Wednesday, February 5th, Daytona Beach and the driver first drove off, unaware of what had happened, the Volsia Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The victim remains hospitalized in a stable state.
“A 71-year-old New York woman was sitting in a beach chair behind her car when she parked next to the Chevrolet Colorado pulled out of the parking lot,” the sheriff’s office said.
“The driver immediately turned right towards the beach exit, and didn’t see the woman in the chair, attacked her with the right rear tire of the truck, which ran over her head.”
The witness reported that the 84-year-old driver “didn’t know that he had hit someone until he was being chased by the witness,” the sheriff’s office said.
When the warning occurred, the driver remained on the scene and “completely cooperated with the investigation,” officials said.
The injured woman was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center with a life-threatening head injury, the sheriff’s office said. Her identity has not been released.
The driver who showed “signs of disability” lives in Deleon Springs, a drive about 25 miles southwest of Daytona Beach, officials said.
The incident is under investigation.
