BOURUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A 12- and 17-year-old person was arrested earlier this week, and lawmakers said they had been caught in a race on a side street in Florida.
Body camera video from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office showed a deputy handing over two vehicles on Tuesday near Dahlia Road and West Parkway.
“What was the race (let)?” the aide asked the first driver identified as the 17-year-old.
The deputy then walks to the second vehicle and finds the 12-year-old child behind the wheel.
“Do you have a license?” the adjutant asked. “I was just testing…” the boy said.

The video then shows the lieutenant telling the boy to jump out of the car and then handcuff him.
“I was racing these two cars on one of the side roads,” the aide told someone while in the police car. “One driver of the car is 12 years old. The other driver is 17. There are two 12-year-old boys.”
“Whose car is he driving?” asked the person. “The 12-year-old was driving the mother’s car of a passenger in the front seat.”
The parents immediately appeared on the scene. The aide told his 17-year-old parents that his son was competing for 12 years old and that “he was arrested today.”
“Who’s been arrested?” asked the parents.

“Both drivers,” the aide said. “Races on the road are illegal.”
The aide said he was parked in a striking police car when he saw two vehicles running towards him.
“I know, a man, but damn it,” the parent said. “My son is starting college this year.”
“Then he needs to get his head out of him (letting),” the aide told his parents.
The 12-year-old was quoted as not having a driver’s license and racing on the highway, according to the Volsia County Sheriff’s Office. The 17-year-old was also cited in a race on the highway.
