Venice, Fla. (WFLA) – Police are investigating after seeing a man step into the waters of Venice Beach after being found lowered near the coast.
The Venice Police Department said officers and fire rescue responded to the beach before 11am on Saturday after reports of the drowning.
Witnesses reported seeing the victim, 47-year-old Wesley Wilcox, put a bag in the sand and enter the water, VPD said. He was alone at the time of the incident.
Wilcox was later found looking down in the water near the coast, before beach fans pulled him into the sand. Police said lifeguards and first responders attempted lifesaving measures but were declared dead at the scene.
The officer was able to identify him after finding his Texas driver’s license and car keys. They found his car nearby.
It is unclear exactly what caused his own death, and the circumstances of his death are still under investigation, police said.
