Tampa Bay Leaders advocate for local priorities in their budget talks

TALHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) – Tampa Bay leaders will return to Capitol in Tallahassee and finish the state budget to finish what they started.

Lawmakers said there is mixed sentiment heading towards this week, and there is uncertainty about what’s in and what’s coming out as they fight for local priorities and assignments.

So, what is being discussed?

House and Senate leaders have reached agreements that include repeated revenue cuts of $2.25 billion. It also includes state debt reductions and permanent sales tax exemptions for Florida families, but also removes corporate rental taxes.

“I think they split that,” said Sen. Jay Collins of R-Hillsborough. “They ended up being a good space. Do I like everything in it? No, I don’t. Do I hate everything in it? No, absolutely not. I think I found a compromise.”

A compromise that some state leaders believe could change as budget meetings continue.

Rep. Fentrice Driskell of D-Tampa said:

From stormwater improvements to public safety, infrastructure projects, healthcare and education, Bay Area leaders continue to drive local priorities.
“I look forward to how important the conversation between the governor and his team is to my constituents in Pinellas County, because, as the governor knows, we went through a considerable hurricane season in 2024.
On June 16, House and Senate leadership hopes that House and Senate leaders will die before sending them to the governor, and vote for the final budget. However, that date is subject to change.

Tuesday, June 3rd:

Meetings allowed from 9am to 8pm

Wednesday, June 4th:

Conference meeting approved from 8am to 8pm, Congress Legislative Budget Committee meeting: 11am to 12:30pm

Thursday, June 5th:

The conference was approved from 8am to 2pm. At that point, all the unresolved issues that Chair Hooper and McClure should address. Senate Sitting: 10:00am – 11:00am Senate Committee Meeting on Approximate Budget: 2:30pm – 5pm Senate Sitting: 5:30pm – 6pm

Provisional: Monday, June 16th:

Senate Shipping: 1pm (Senate sitting time will be finalized according to a 72-hour cooling period).
